Features of obtaining a residence permit in France

France has traditionally attracted the attention of Russians at any time — like a century ago, many Russian-speaking citizens not only acquire real estate in Napoleon’s country, but also actively move there for permanent residence.
Registration of residence permit
For a legal and comfortable stay of foreigners in France, you will need to issue a residence permit (titre de séjour). But everyone who wants to obtain these residence permits must first apply for a standard visa at a consulate in the country of residence and only then come to France. Or there is another option – registration of a residence permit as a “guest” (visiteur). True, this type of document in its essence is not much different from a regular visa, since it does not give the right to work or medical insurance. All possible visa variations can be studied on the website of the French Embassy in Russia or on the French sites of immigration services of different departments.

If we are talking about obtaining a visiteur visa, then it is carried out at the French consulate at the place of residence, where the examination of the dossier takes 1-2 weeks. At the same time, it is necessary to collect a sufficiently voluminous package of documents regarding social and civil status, sources of personal income and the applicant’s family. But the main thing is to justify the reason why such a document is required instead of the usual short-term visa. Visiteur visa is issued for one year with the possibility of renewal. During the practice of experts, there were practically no refusals of this kind, but this is due to the fact that people have real reasons that fit into the requirements of the administration.

Once already in France, a foreigner within a fairly short period of time (no more than two months after entry) can apply for a residence permit. The procedure is carried out in one of the French immigration centers of the prefecture of the department of residence. In this case, a foreigner must undergo a medical examination. If the visa outcome is positive, the “sticker” in the passport is transformed into a plastic card on which the type of residence permit is described and the time period for which the document is issued is indicated. Subsequently, the term can be updated or extended, depending on the situation.

Permanent residence and citizenship
After the first year, a residence permit is requested again – depending on the situation, it can be given for five years. Ten years later, a foreigner has the right to apply for a permanent residence permit (carte de résident), but this format is usually relevant if you really want to take part in elections and other events in the life of the country as a full-fledged citizen – this is usually the evidence of the French spouse.

To obtain permanent residence (issued for 10 years), it is necessary to prove that the petitioner has been resident in France for at least five years, has sufficient income (higher than the national average salary), regularly pays all taxes, has full medical insurance and a certain level of French . Having lived in France for at least five years (four years in the case of marriage with a citizen of the country), you can also apply for citizenship if the applicant is able to prove his full integration into French society, including good command of the French language.

Residence permit and real estate purchase
France is not the country where they buy square meters in order to obtain a residence permit, since there is no specialized program related only to real estate. It is important to understand that the purchase of real estate in France without the presence of any other grounds does not give any rights when applying for a residence permit. The fact that a foreigner has housing in this country can be just one of the positive factors in the immigration dossier, no more. But at the same time, the demand for the opportunity to obtain a residence permit among foreign property buyers in France always remains high. Since real estate in this country is quite expensive, it is mainly the owners of large companies, business owners who can afford to remotely manage the company. But most often, buyers are interested in the possibility of obtaining a residence permit in France when buying real estate on the principle of “that was.” The real reasons are less than half.

Also, a homeowner in France needs to prove himself a reliable taxpayer: a period must pass, during which a foreigner timely paid all taxes related to his real estate. Therefore, the period of ownership of real estate should be at least a year, and its value (depending on the zone) should be no lower than average. Thirdly, it is very important to show your regular financial viability, which, according to the French side, will allow you to fully reside in France, since a residence permit does not give the right to work. Usually, an average salary of about 2000 euros is based on an average salary, so it is necessary to prove the existence of such an amount for each applicant.
